Esthetic Restorations: What exists in most modern restorations in terms of today are the composite resins, which are impregnated resins with ceramic particles that through bonding procedures are placed in teeth, restoring aesthetics and function. The composites were created as an aesthetic alternative to replace metal fillings with amalgam. They have the same color as natural teeth and are an aesthetic alternative to restore them and also give strength and durability.
Advantages:
– The action of the adhesive resins often protects the natural tooth against fractures.
– Are identical in color to natural teeth.
– Usually needs only one query.
– Low sensitivity after completing the restoration, different from amalgam fillings.
– Less wear of the tooth to restore.
Disadvantages:
– The procedure takes longer than in metallic restorations.
– Higher cost than amalgam fillings.
Inlays and onlays (“blocks”)
To restore tooth surfaces more extensive prosthetic professionals will often indicate partial restorations with onlays and inlays instead of composite resin or crowns.
The inlays and onlays can be made of resin or ceramic. The inlays are similar to a traditional composite resin restoration cemented on natural teeth. The onlays are indicated for major reconstructions, since they involve the cusps of the teeth, being more conservative than full crown prosthesis. Both methods require two queries to the end of the procedure.
Advantages:
– Highly aesthetic
– Without the presence of metal
– Durability
– Resistant adhesive after the procedure
Disadvantages:
– Higher cost than composites
– Requires 2 visits to the dentist
Facets
They are thin sheets prepared specifically for each patient’s tooth, which may be ceramic or composite resin. They are indicated for changing shape, color and alignment. The facets are an alternative to prosthetic crowns, because they are very natural and have a greater durability. Being very common for patients to choose facets when they have very small, or malformed, or discolored and misaligned teeth. The facets resolve these irregularities, restoring a beautiful and lasting smile.
