Orofacial Pain and Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD)
The TMD is not caused by a single factor but by a group of conditions affecting the joint and muscles around. The exact cause of the disorder is unknown; some factors are related to improper bite, arthritis, trauma, severe stress, or a combination of factors.
Clenching or grinding teeth, a condition called “bruxism,” may develop from stress or as a result of a sleep disorder. These disorders can cause muscle fatigue and creates painful muscle spasms. Untreated muscle problems may affect the joints and muscles, perpetuating the cycle of pain.
Some symptoms of the disorder:
– Joint pain when chewing, biting or yawning
– Ear pain with no infection in the region, spreading over the face
– Zoom in the ear
– Crackling or grating when opening the mouth
– Difficulty in opening or closing the mouth
– Teeth grinding
– Restricted jaw movements
– When you wake up with sore muscles in the face
– Headaches or neck frequently
– Abnormal tooth wear
